SUMMARY:Voices of the Epidemic: How the Opioid Crisis Affects PA's Families
DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\nFrom Spotlight PA:\n\nHundreds of milli
ons of dollars from opioid settlements have flowed into Pennsylvania to he
lp the state respond to an epidemic that kills thousands of people each ye
ar — and even more money is expected in the years to come.\n\nBut member
s of the public\, including people who have lost loved ones to overdose de
aths\, have been routinely shut out of having a meaningful say in how the
money should be spent. The crisis has deeply affected families\, increased
risks for children\, and added pressure to agencies responsible for inves
tigating cases of abuse and neglect.\n\nIn our reporting\, we’ve heard f
rom parents\, advocates\, and other community members who want greater tra
nsparency and a larger role in these settlement decisions. Now we’re con
tinuing those conversations.\n\nJoin us for a live discussion on how the o
pioid epidemic has affected families\, and how they want to see the settle
ment money used. We’ll hear directly from those impacted by the issue an
d share tools that have increased transparency and accountability. We enco
urage our audience to share their stories to their comfort level and try t
o gain new perspectives from listening to others.\n\nSpeakers:Ed Mahon\, i
nvestigative reporter for Spotlight PACathleen Palm\, founder\, Center for
Children’s JusticeKathleen Strain\, manager of advocacy and peer servic
es\, Partnership to End Addiction\n\nThe event will be in partnership with
  Center for Children’s Justice\, Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Network\, P
artnership to End Addiction\, and Berks Community Health Center\, who will
offer local and state resources related to addiction and family support s
ervices.\n\nThis event is made possible in part by an engagement grant by
the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism’s 2024 Data Fellowship.\n
\nThis event will be photographed and recorded. If you do not wish to be p
hotographed\, please notify a staff member.
